Idea 5 of 9 from @0xGeeGee's latest thesis thread. He argues that options adoption in crypto has been called eight or more times across cycles and is still underpriced. This basket holds the two names from his options watchlist that TradeBoard lists.
Thesis
- Derive (DRV) is the incumbent onchain options venue and the sector's reference name. After its big run it may need to rest, or it may already have rested enough.
- Lighter (LIT): binary options on their own are basically prediction markets. The upside is in real, uncapped options, especially if Lighter can win some of Robinhood's degen traders. Robinhood is keeping its most important products in-house, but the Lighter link is real and both sides want the token higher.
- Paradex (DIME) is the third name. It's one of the largest options venues, though it does a fraction of Derive's volume and DIME already trades at a premium for that. Season 3 has ended but rewards haven't been paid out yet. He's watching for an entry once the airdrop gets sold into thin liquidity. DIME isn't in this basket because TradeBoard doesn't list Paradex's token (the
DIME spot pair here is an unrelated Hyperliquid token).
Why now
- Lighter launched BTC/ETH binary options on Lighter Core on Oct 19.
- Robinhood Chain went live on Jul 1 with Lighter perps integrated. Lighter committed $11M of LIT to the Robinhood community and says it will file for a US (CFTC) license next month.
- LIT is at $3.18, down from $4.85 a month ago (90-day range $1.96–$5.59). DRV is at $0.353, down from a $0.575 high after tripling over 90 days.
What confirms / kills it
Confirms: Lighter ships uncapped (non-binary) options; options volume shows up from Robinhood-linked users; Derive's volume and fees keep growing.
Kills: Lighter stays binaries-only; Robinhood keeps options fully in-house; options volume stays flat into Q1.
